Mixed Metal Sculpture by Nicholas Grant

Nick Grant_400px.jpg

One of the current shows at the gallery, Edge of Land, introduces native Mainer Nick Grant, a local sculptor who finds his artistic expression at the heart of his motorcycle garage. Using a torch and handheld welder, Nick adeptly transforms mechanical parts and an array of metals into captivating works of art that radiate his passion and skill. He blurs the lines between mechanics and artistry to create unique pieces that tell stories through his craftsmanship.

Raised in West Gardiner, Maine, Thekla Jubinville is a recent graduate of Bryn Mawr, PA, with a BFA in fine arts. Concentrating in sculpture, she developed a versatile artistic practice, working with metal but also exploring paintings and mixed media. Her studio in West Gardiner is the heart of her creative endeavors, where she adapts her materials to best suit each project at hand.

The current installation at the gallery encourages introspection on the biases and preconceptions we carry. By presenting an array of faces without context or backstory, Thekla challenges the viewer to see beyond their own initial impressions and recognize the need to look deeper and acknowledge the complexities within. In essence, this work is a mirror held up to our own processes of judgment, urging us to reconsider the lens through which we view the world and those within it. Through this visual dialogue, Thekla hopes to foster an urge to face our own need to take accountability.
